Phases

The Gateway can be developed in two Phases.  Phase 1 would develop the trail to Route 209, including the conversion of the railroad bridge to the Gateway Trestle Bridge Park.  Grant funding of $1.7 million has already been allocated to connect the Hurley/O&W Trail to Kingston.  The possibility exists to tie the Hurley Trail into the Gateway by constructing a bridge over the Esopus Creek on the near side of Route 209 and constructing approximately a half mile of connecting trail, thus creating an amenity that can be quickly usable and a source of pride/branding for Kingston residents and tourists.  Phase 1A can concentrate on the short segment from Washington Ave. to Route 209.

Phase 2 would create the Gateway 209 Biking Pedestrian Bridge and extend the trail to Hurley Mountain Road and beyond, ultimately connecting to the 11.5 miles of trail being developed along the North Shore of the Ashokan Reservoir.

Funding Issues....

The U&D Corridor has been a significant magnet for grant funding with funding, before trail construction has even started, amounting already to approximately $9 million, with another $3.5 million for related Kingston revitalization and cycling/pedestrian complete streets infrastructure.

Some segment of this may be allocated as seed money for  Phase 1A for construction of the trail from Washington Ave to Route 209, connecting to the Hurley Trail.

Funding for remaining aspects of Phase 1 and Phase 2 has the below kinds of sample fundraising results for trail infrastructure locally, providing an optimistic platform for potential fundraising for the completion of the Gateway.

  • Walkway  $38 million

    • NY State Funding $22.5 million

    • Dyson Foundation $12 million

    • Federal Govt. $3.5 million

    • Scenic Hudson $1 million

    • Other Foundations $850,000

  • Rosendale Trestle

    • Private funding only   --  $1.4 million
